AN ARMY OF PROTECTION ON YOUR SIDE

Why Cypress Residents Need Militia Protection’s Home Automation

Home automation intersects neatly with the world of security, which is why we at Militia Protection have become the market leaders in Cypress for this technology. A fully automated home with device control for lights, thermostats, doors, and other devices delivers many advantages. Here’s why Cypress residents will benefit from adding home automation to their households:

  • Enhanced Security: At Militia Protection, we’re dedicated to the Z-Wave standard. This is a wireless standard that will network your various smart devices and allow for easy control via a smartphone app or smart switches. Z-Wave also has another advantage: security. This wireless communications standard has two levels of encryption and works from a closed standard, so it’s much harder to hack into a Z-Wave system than other types of home automation technology.
  • Better Convenience: Home automation is a game changer when it comes to convenience because it turns traditionally analog items into the internet of things (IoT). Now, you can control your lights, thermostat, doors, and other devices from remote distances, as long as you have an internet connection.

  • Better Energy Efficiency: When you can control devices from afar, you’re adding more than just convenience to your everyday life. When you’re able to turn items on and off from a distance, this also makes it easier to disable devices when you’re not using them. As a result, lights are turned off when you’re not in the room and you can create heating and cooling “zones” when controlling the thermostat from an app. This will save on energy bills in the long run.

Why Z-Wave Is a Better Option Than Zigbee and Wi-Fi

All home automation technology isn’t created equal. At Militia Protection, we focus on security, even when we’re helping Cypress, TX, residents set up their homes for home automation. With that said, Z-Wave isn’t the only home automation technology out there, but we believe it is the superior choice. Many of the other home automation companies in Cypress, TX, use either Zigbee or Wi-Fi for their devices, but these simply aren’t as good as Z-Wave.

Here’s a breakdown of why Z-Wave stands as the more secure and reliable option for home automation, especially when compared to other competing communication standards.

Z-Wave vs Zigbee vs Wi-Fi
Z-Wave Zigbee Wi-Fi
Range With Z-Wave, you can expect ranges of greater than 300 feet outdoors and 100 feet indoors. This is because Z-Wave uses the low radio frequency of 908.42. Zigbee has a lower range compared to Z-Wave. At maximum, you can expect about 40 feet of range between devices. Like Zigbee, Wi-Fi operates on the higher bands of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. While this provides good speeds, it also has trouble producing higher ranges, especially in cluttered areas. In most cases, you can expect ranges of about 150 feet.
Penetration With its lower frequency compared to Zigbee, Z-Wave has a much better penetration so that it’s easy for the signal to reach devices separated by even thicker walls. Since Zigbee uses a higher frequency, materials used in walls and indoor devices and equipment can interfere with the signal between devices. These will actively reduce the signal range. Since Wi-Fi uses the same radio frequencies as Zigbee, it runs into the same problem when broadcasting through thicker materials and items. The more clutter and obstructions, the less range.
Security Z-Wave uses a closed network protocol so that bad actors cannot get into the system. Z-Wave also uses two encryption systems to add an extra layer of security. While both use AES128 encryption, Z-Wave also employs Security 2 (S2) encryption. While Zigbee uses AES128 for encryption, it’s also an open standard that may have some vulnerabilities. Wi-Fi is designed to be an open standard, which also introduces security vulnerabilities. The code used for transmission operations is available to all, which can be problematic.
Speeds Z-Wave has a maximum transmission speed of 100kbps. In this regard, Zigbee is the better choice as it has transmission speeds of up to 250kbps. This makes it a better option for some. Wi-Fi, like Zigbee, is faster than Z-Wave. At maximum, you can expect transmission rates of up to 9.6 Gbps.

The Kinds of Home Automation Devices Militia Offers

Here are a few of the device types we offer at Militia Protection:

Smart Devices Table
Type of Smart Device How They Work
Smart Door Locks With a smart door lock, you’re able to control the lock remotely. This means that you can use keyless entry and remotely provide access to visitors.
Smart Garage Door Modules Similar to smart door locks, these kinds of garage door modules allow users to open and close garage doors remotely via an app. The app also provides status updates so that you know if your garage door is open, shut, when it was last opened, and if the door is between being open or shut.
Smart Lighting Smart lighting uses an app or voice commands to allow you to control the lighting profile of your home. Forget to turn off a light in a room that you left? You can quickly turn off the light from afar. Also, smart controls allow you to dim and program lights to turn off/on when needed.
Smart Thermostats With a smart thermostat, like other smart devices, you’re able to take control via an app. These also offer programmability, and when you’re out of a room, you program the device to reduce output for a more efficient experience.
