AN ARMY OF PROTECTION ON YOUR SIDE

Why Aldine Residents Need Militia’s Home Automation

With as much as 50% of the homes here being multi-generational, Aldine households have a lot of room for new technologies that help life become more convenient. Home automation isn’t just for the lights; many people use smart home controls to monitor their home’s security, grant access control, and manage the internal climates of individual rooms.

Since residents here use cooling year-round to help deal with the Texas heat, with home automation, you can effortlessly manage your home’s climate. This will help your home save on energy bills and heighten day-to-day convenience. This is because smart thermostats allow you to zone your cooling and use cooling systems only in the rooms that are occupied. When you leave a room, you can wait until you’re in your new room and turn off the air conditioning in the room you left using a smartphone app.

Another home automation technology that we use in many Aldine homes is the smart lock. In Aldine, with so many larger households, there are a lot of deliveries from e-commerce companies. Smart locks not only grant access control so that delivery personnel can place boxes indoors, but many that we offer also have video capabilities so that you can know who’s on your front porch.

Z-Wave: The Go-To Technology for Home Automation

With many of our competitors, home automation doesn’t align hand-in-hand with home security. As a result, many opt to use communications technologies that aren’t quite as secure as the Z-Wave systems we use at Militia. These include smart home systems that run on:

  • Wi-Fi
  • Thread
  • BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy)
  • Zigbee

Why choose Z-Wave? Z-Wave has several advantages over other smart home automation technologies. Here’s a look at how this technology stands out.

Z Wave repeater
Range and Penetration
Like every communications system for home automation, Z-Wave uses radio waves to build a network of devices. In this case, Z-Wave uses the low frequency of 908 MHz to connect devices. Our competitors’ systems, which use non-Z-Wave technology, use higher frequencies of either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. Since these have a much higher frequency, these experience higher rates of interference and have a more difficult time penetrating materials like concrete.

With Z-Wave, there’s a much lower incidence of radio interference and there’s a much easier time penetrating walls and objects between devices. Also, Z-Wave signals easily reach up to 100 meters outside or about 30 meters indoors with much more stability than the other communication systems.
Encryption
Z-Wave has military grade AES-128 encryption as well as S2 security certification on any Z-Wave device. This ensures that it’s very hard to hack into a Z-Wave-based system from the outside.
Closed Standard
Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Thread, and BLE are all designed with an open standard. This means that their specifications are publicly available so that multiple vendors are able to create products and services that are interoperable. While this seems like a nice methodology, it’s not the best for security. Z-Wave, on the other hand, uses a closed standard. Via the Z-Wave Alliance, which is the governing body of the protocol, each product that runs on Z-Wave is certified. This means that all Z-Wave devices will talk to other Z-Wave devices, even if they aren’t the same brand. This also means that bad actors can’t exploit vulnerabilities by using their own Z-Wave devices to infiltrate your network.
Reliable Mesh Infrastructure
Each Z-Wave device works as a repeater, which expands the network’s range and strength of the network. This meshed networking system also runs at the same aforementioned low frequency, so walls and obstacles become even less of a problem.
Low Power Usage
Compared to other smart home technologies, Z-Wave uses far less energy, which means that battery-powered devices, like smart locks, smart garage door openers, and sensors, will require far less energy to operate.
